The practical answer

Understand it. Then take the next step.

AAC and AC-3 are different compressed audio families. A device may decode one locally and pass another to a receiver. Check the actual codec and supported output path when one track is silent; a generic audio-supported claim is insufficient. Check both what the player can decode and what the destination can receive. A compatible local decoder may produce usable PCM, while an unsupported encoded passthrough can be silent even though the source video and another audio family work normally.

Separate decoding and transport

A box reading the track does not prove the receiver accepts its bitstream. Read the actual track's codec information rather than using its filename or container extension as a substitute. AAC and AC-3 are distinct formats with their own support requirements, and an app's support can depend on the platform's available decoding path. Keep channel count and sample rate in the report as additional context. A file that plays its video correctly has not demonstrated that the selected audio track is decoded or routed successfully.

Compare a compatible track

A supplied alternate can narrow the issue. Map whether the player decodes to PCM or sends encoded audio to a TV, receiver or soundbar. The receiving device and any intermediate transport must accept that choice. If a supplied alternate track works, compare it in the same scene and route to narrow the issue. A supported stereo PCM test can add evidence when the source can decode the failing track, but do not assume every device exposes conversion for every codec.

Avoid codec-pack guesses

Use supported app and device updates. Use the app's supported updates and documented output choices rather than arbitrary codec installers or extension changes. Renaming a container does not convert the audio frames inside it. For a personal authorized file requiring conversion, use a trusted tool and preserve the original, then verify channels and synchronization in the result. For a supplied stream, ask about a compatible legitimate rendition rather than attempting to modify private addresses or bypass the player's supported path.

A practical sequence

  1. Read the selected track codec
  2. Identify decode versus passthrough
  3. Compare a supplied compatible track
  4. Use documented updates and output modes

An example

AAC works through device decoding while an unsupported AC-3 passthrough mode produces silence. A supplied AAC track plays while an AC-3 track is silent through one output route. Checking the destination's format support and comparing supported source decoding gives a useful compatibility diagnosis; simply renaming the file would leave the encoded audio unchanged.

Questions about this topic

AreAAC andAC-3 the same?

No. They are separate compressed audio formats rather than interchangeable names for the same bitstream.

Will renaming the file convert audio?

No. Actual conversion must decode and re-encode or otherwise produce a supported representation.
