The tvg-chno attribute is used by some IPTV playlist readers to assign channel numbers. Other readers ignore it or apply their own numbering and sort order. It is useful navigation metadata when supported, but it does not determine the stream identity, guide schedule or account permissions.
Decide what numbering should accomplish
Numbers work well for a short household list or a remote with a numeric keypad. They become less useful when thousands of entries compete for the same range. Leave room between categories if you expect to add personal favorites later.
Handle duplicate numbers deliberately
Two entries with the same number may be reordered, renumbered or displayed together depending on the reader. Keep separate editions distinguishable. A number collision is a browsing problem; it does not mean that the streams have merged.
Prefer local sorting when possible
A player’s favorites or custom channel-order feature may survive source updates better than editing a downloaded list. Test whether a refresh preserves your changes. Keep a simple export of your organization if the player supports one.
