A QR code is a way to encode information such as a URL. It is not proof that the destination is safe or belongs to the service. Preview the address before opening it, especially when the code arrives unexpectedly or appears in an image that could have been replaced.
Treat the code like a link
A camera preview can reveal the target hostname before you proceed. Compare it with the publisher or service address you intended to use. If the destination is hidden behind a shortener or unfamiliar redirect, verify it through a known route.
Separate app activation from service contact
A player activation QR may lead to the player publisher, while a support QR may lead to messaging. Those are different purposes. Do not enter streaming credentials into an unrelated destination merely because the code appears on a television screen.
Avoid publishing private QR codes
A code can contain a device token or account-specific link. Inspect what it encodes before adding it to a guide, screenshot or public support request. Use a neutral public link for reusable instructions.
A practical sequence
- Preview the destination before opening it.
- Compare the hostname and purpose with the intended task.
- Keep account-specific codes out of public screenshots.
An example
A QR code beside an app licence screen can point to the app publisher rather than the streaming service. Read the destination and screen context before entering account details.
Questions about this topic
Is scanning the same as trusting the destination?
No. Preview and verify the link.
Can a QR code contain a private token?
Yes. Do not assume every code is a generic public website link.
