Garbled accents or replacement symbols usually point to text encoding or decoding rather than video quality. A playlist saved in one character encoding and read as another can distort channel names while the stream URLs still work. Repair the text in a private copy instead of repeatedly replacing working login details.
Start with the source text
Compare the original download with the name displayed by the player. If the original already contains corrupted text, a local display setting cannot recover the intended characters reliably. Request a corrected source or edit only the affected personal labels.
Use one consistent encoding
UTF-8 is the usual choice for modern multilingual playlists. Save through a plain-text editor that shows the encoding explicitly. Repeatedly converting between encodings can make damage harder to reverse, so keep the original bytes available.
Keep identifiers unchanged
Display names can be repaired without guessing at guide identifiers or stream paths. Changing tvg-id values while fixing accents can create a second problem by breaking EPG matching. Treat a label correction as a narrowly scoped edit.
A practical sequence
- Keep a copy of the original file.
- Open it with an encoding-aware plain-text editor.
- Correct display text without altering stream URLs or guide keys.
An example
An entry shown as Français may have been decoded with the wrong character set. The video can remain perfectly usable while the label needs correction.
Questions about this topic
Will a faster connection fix the text?
No. Text encoding is independent of connection speed.
Should I change the stream address too?
No, unless there is separate evidence that it is wrong.
