M3U8 commonly indicates an M3U playlist encoded as UTF-8. The extension is also widely used by HLS playlists. A file ending in .m3u8 might therefore be a channel list or a media-delivery manifest. Read the contents and the player’s input requirements before deciding what kind of resource it is.
Look beyond the suffix
A channel list contains entries representing separate stations or programmes. An HLS manifest may list alternate renditions or sequential media pieces for one presentation. Both can be text, so a filename alone cannot establish whether a particular import screen accepts it.
Protect non-English names
UTF-8 can represent channel and programme names from many writing systems. Saving the file in a legacy encoding can corrupt accents or produce replacement symbols. Keep an original copy before using an editor’s encoding conversion.
Do not rename to solve unrelated failures
Changing .m3u to .m3u8 does not repair invalid URLs, missing credentials or unsupported streams. If the player recognizes entries but cannot start them, the extension is unlikely to be the decisive issue.
A practical sequence
- Inspect whether the file describes channels or media segments.
- Keep text encoded consistently as UTF-8 where required.
- Use the import method documented by the player.
An example
A channel list and a live HLS manifest can both end in .m3u8. One offers many selectable stations; the other may describe the pieces of a single station.
Questions about this topic
Is M3U8 always video?
No. It is a playlist extension rather than a promise about the media inside.
Will renaming improve quality?
No. A suffix does not change encoded video.
