XMLTV can carry programme rating metadata. A rating describes how a source classifies an airing; it does not automatically enforce a household restriction. Whether a player uses ratings for filtering depends on its features, the selected rating system and the completeness of the source data.
Identify the rating system
Age labels and classification categories differ by country and organization. The same number or letter can carry different meanings across systems. Keep the system name with the rating instead of treating the label as universal.
Use actual parental controls
A PIN, locked category or profile restriction is a separate mechanism from a guide label. Test the player’s controls with a non-sensitive example and keep the PIN private. Do not assume missing ratings will be blocked automatically.
Plan for incomplete metadata
Some programmes may have no rating. Household rules should account for unknown entries rather than depending entirely on perfect guide data. Review the player’s documented behavior for unrated content.
A practical sequence
- Read the rating system attached to the label.
- Configure the player’s real parental-control feature.
- Test how unrated programmes are handled.
An example
A guide can show an age classification while the channel remains selectable. The rating is information; the player needs a separate rule to turn it into a restriction.
Questions about this topic
Is a rating a password?
No. It is metadata.
Will all readers block the same rated programmes?
No. Filtering features and rating-system support differ.
