Why a fast speed test can still leave live TV buffering

A speed test measures one transfer path for a short period.

Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet where available. Test on the device you actually use.
The practical answer

Understand it. Then take the next step.

A fast speed test cannot rule out buffering because it samples a particular server, device and moment. Live TV needs each piece of media before the stored picture runs out. Brief wireless outages, a busy route to the stream or a bitrate that leaves little spare capacity can interrupt that delivery. Start by distinguishing a loading pause from uneven motion, then compare the actual viewing device over a controlled connection.

Measure the path the television uses

A phone beside the router can have a different antenna, frequency band and network route from a box hidden behind the screen. Run an available test on the viewing device in its normal position. Record download rate and time, but keep the playback result alongside them. A short transfer can fill several parallel connections and still miss the intermittent interruption that matters to a live player with a smaller buffer.

Recognise the stage that is failing

A loading indicator followed by a jump forward suggests that media delivery or availability stalled. Continuous sound with jerky camera movement can instead suggest decoding pressure or display timing. An app closing completely is another symptom again. Note which of these actually happens before changing settings. Increasing internet speed cannot correct every decoder error, while changing picture processing will not restore segments that never reach the player. A documented decoder-mode comparison can help distinguish those cases.

Compare one variable at a time

Use the same box, player and programme when comparing Ethernet with Wi-Fi. Watch for long enough to include the usual failure interval and repeat at a similar viewing time. If wired playback becomes stable, investigate the wireless path. If both fail, compare another stream in the same player. That separates a particular source from a problem shared by the device or wider connection without declaring either result conclusive. Repeat an inconsistent result.

A practical sequence

  1. Record the stream, time and exact symptom.
  2. Test the viewing device in place.
  3. Repeat the same programme over Ethernet.
  4. Compare a second source without changing players.

An example

For example, a phone might report 250 Mbps while a box behind a metal TV panel loses its wireless connection briefly each minute. Stable playback after moving that box or using a cable would identify a useful local change even though the broadband package stays the same.

Questions about this topic

Does a high result guarantee uninterrupted video?

No. It measures that test path during that interval, not every future media request.

Should I upgrade broadband first?

First compare the actual device and a wired connection; an upgrade cannot repair its local radio path.
