A URL can contain the same parameter name more than once. Different servers or libraries may choose the first value, the last value or a list of values. Accidentally appending a second username or output parameter can therefore change the request in ways that are difficult to diagnose. Use a fresh supplied URL rather than accumulating edits.
Inspect how the link was assembled
Repeatedly adding text to a copied address can leave old parameters in place. A long URL can look plausible even when it contains conflicting values. Keep the original source and compare the parameter names privately.
Do not guess server precedence
There is no safe universal rule that the last duplicate wins. The service implementation decides how it handles repeated fields. A link that works in one tool may be interpreted differently by another component.
Replace rather than patch repeatedly
When a service supplies updated access details, use its current complete instructions. If maintaining your own software, build query parameters through a proper URL API and decide explicitly whether repeated keys are intended.
A practical sequence
- Compare the edited link with the original.
- Look for repeated parameter names.
- Use the current complete supplied URL for account import.
An example
A synthetic query such as ?type=old&type=new contains two values for one key. Assuming which value the server selects can lead to the wrong diagnosis.
Questions about this topic
Is a duplicate key always invalid syntax?
No. Its interpretation depends on the application.
Should I rely on the last value winning?
No. Use the service’s intended request form.
