MAC address explained

A MAC address identifies a network interface at the link layer, such as a Wi-Fi or Ethernet interface.

The term in context.

A MAC address identifies a network interface at the link layer, such as a Wi-Fi or Ethernet interface. The same device can have different addresses for different interfaces, and supported platforms may use randomized Wi-Fi addresses in certain contexts. A MAC address is therefore not a universal permanent identity for every application on a television. A player's activation screen may show a separate identifier even if its label informally mentions MAC. A public IP address has a different role in internet routing. Understanding which value is being requested prevents confusion when configuring a local network or following a specific publisher's activation process.

An interface address is local-network information

A router can use an interface's current address when showing connected clients or applying supported network rules. That address does not ordinarily travel as the device's link-layer identity across every internet hop. A service observing a public IP is seeing different information. Do not infer that changing a router's internet address necessarily changes the Wi-Fi interface address or the player's own activation identifier.

Randomization changes the identification assumptions

Android and other platforms can use randomized addresses for privacy, with behavior depending on version, network and implementation. The value shown for a particular connected network can therefore differ from a factory interface address. Read the active network details and manufacturer guidance before configuring address-based rules. Disabling privacy behavior is not a general-purpose remedy for a streaming failure and should not be treated as one.

Use the value required by the actual workflow

For a router question, identify the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet interface. For player activation, follow the player's documented field rather than substituting a physical address by guesswork. If switching from Wi-Fi to cable changes a local-network rule, that can reflect a different interface address. It does not by itself show a changed subscription entitlement or prove that the service binds accounts to physical MAC addresses.

An illustrative example

A television appears as one client over Wi-Fi and another over Ethernet because the interfaces use different MAC addresses. A router rule tied to the Wi-Fi address does not automatically cover Ethernet. The player's activation identifier may remain unchanged, since its identity belongs to a separate application system rather than either interface.

Practical actions

  1. Identify the active interface and current network address for router tasks.
  2. Check randomization behavior before relying on address-based identification.
  3. Use the player-documented activation identifier instead of assuming it is the hardware MAC.
