The term in context.

Refresh rate describes how often a display updates its picture each second, expressed in hertz. A 60 Hz screen refreshes sixty times per second; that does not mean every programme supplies sixty unique frames. The display can repeat a lower-rate source, interpolate pictures or vary its timing within supported modes. The effective result depends on the video source, player, operating system, output connection and television, so the largest advertised refresh number is not a complete description of playback quality.

How a source fits the screen

When source fps divides evenly into display hertz, each picture can remain for an equal number of refreshes. A 24 fps film fits evenly into 120 Hz because each picture can be shown five times. At 60 Hz the same source often requires unequal repetition, which can make a smooth pan appear rhythmically uneven.

Output modes are negotiated

A streaming box may expose several resolution and refresh combinations over HDMI. The television, cable path and any receiver influence which modes are available. A panel marketed at 120 Hz may still receive a 60 Hz HDMI signal. Conversely, a device may select a high output rate while the app continues presenting lower-rate video.

Motion processing is another control

Manufacturers use different names for interpolation, black-frame insertion and other motion processing. Those features can change perceived smoothness or brightness independently of refresh selection. Compare them separately; changing several controls at once makes it difficult to identify the cause of judder, flicker or an unwanted video-like appearance.

An illustrative example

A 120 Hz television receives 24 fps film from an app capable of matching rates. The display repeats each picture evenly. If an external box forces 60 Hz instead, the panel may need additional conversion even though the television itself supports the higher rate.

Practical actions

  1. Inspect the active input resolution and hertz on the television.
  2. Compare only output modes officially supported by the complete HDMI path.
  3. Test refresh matching separately from the television’s motion-smoothing controls.
