The term in context.

Video resolution describes the pixel dimensions of a picture, commonly expressed as width by height. It establishes how many samples are available in that image grid, but does not by itself establish how much useful scene detail survived capture, processing and compression. Source resolution, decoded picture size, output signal resolution and a display's native grid are related but separate properties. A player can decode a smaller source and upscale it into a larger output. Physical screen size is measured in units such as inches and does not identify the number of pixels being displayed.

Why equal dimensions can look different

Focus, camera quality, source processing, compression and bitrate all influence the detail represented within a pixel grid. Two pictures with the same dimensions can therefore look very different. Motion also depends on frame rate and temporal processing. A high-resolution label is useful technical information, but it is not a complete quality assessment and cannot reveal whether the source was enlarged from an earlier smaller image.

Following the viewing chain

Check the actual selected stream in a supported player information panel, then separately check the output signal and display mode. A television reporting a 4K input is describing that signal, which may contain an upscaled lower-resolution programme. Adaptive playback may change the source representation while output remains constant. Keep these stages separate when deciding whether a quality-selection setting had its intended effect.

Making a fair picture comparison

Use the same scene, viewing distance and display settings when comparing supplied representations. Look for retained detail and compression defects rather than trusting a label alone. Aspect ratio and pixel shape can also affect presentation, so width and height should be interpreted with the media's display information. Stretching an image to fill the screen changes its appearance without improving its underlying detail.

An illustrative example

A television reports a 3840-by-2160 input while the player's supported information panel identifies a 1920-by-1080 source. The player or output device is enlarging the picture for the display grid. Those readings can both be correct, and neither establishes that the programme originated from a native 4K capture.

Practical actions

  1. Check selected source dimensions
  2. Check output and display modes separately
  3. Compare the same scene at consistent settings
