The term in context.

A screen reader is assistive software that communicates interface content and controls through speech or other supported output. It relies on information exposed by the application, such as a control’s label, role, state and relationships. It does more than read visible words aloud, and it cannot reliably infer every meaning from an unlabeled icon or decorative image. On a television, it can help users navigate menus and programme information. Its interface announcements are distinct from audio description of the video and from captions representing the soundtrack.

Semantics make controls understandable

A useful announcement identifies what a control does and whether it is selected, checked or unavailable. An unlabeled settings icon may expose little beyond a generic button role. Good application structure also determines reading order and which elements can be reached. Turning speech on cannot supply missing labels if the app never exposes meaningful information to the accessibility system.

A screen reader may announce a channel name, programme title or playback position, depending on app support. It does not automatically turn a film’s silent actions into narration. Likewise, a fully described soundtrack does not make an inaccessible play button operable. A usable experience requires both navigable interface controls and appropriate accessible presentations for the media content itself.

Check tasks rather than isolated labels

Evaluate whether a user can find an item, start it, select a track and leave playback using available input controls. Listen for current state after changes, not just the initial label. If focus gets trapped or menus announce only generic controls, record the exact screen and action. Comparing another app can help distinguish a system speech problem from one app’s exposed structure.

An illustrative example

A player’s caption button is announced only as “button,” with no indication of its purpose or state. Captions themselves may work visually, yet a screen-reader user cannot confidently discover or toggle them. A meaningful label and state announcement address that interface problem without altering the caption file or video stream.

Practical actions

  1. Check labels, roles and selected states on essential controls.
  2. Complete a whole playback task using accessible navigation.
  3. Record the exact screen where speech or focus becomes unusable.
