The term in context.

Video on demand lets a viewer select an available item and start it on a personal playback timeline instead of joining an ongoing broadcast. The item may be delivered as a file or through a segmented streaming format. Start, seek, resume and track selection depend on the media, server and application working together. A catalogue card identifies an item but does not prove that every listed resolution, audio language or subtitle track is currently retrievable. Access also remains subject to the service's availability and authorization rules for that particular programme.

What gives the viewer control

An on-demand presentation usually describes a finite duration and media positions that the player can request. Seeking needs suitable indexing and access to the requested media, rather than just a moving progress bar. Resume additionally requires the player or account system to store and restore a position. These functions can differ between devices even when the same programme starts correctly on each.

Diagnosing a repeatable point of failure

If an item always stops at the same position, compare that position on another supported client or try another item. A damaged resource, missing segment or timing defect may follow the programme. Random interruptions across unrelated items suggest a broader delivery or device issue. Keep the selected audio track and quality in the report, because those choices can reference different media resources.

On demand is not necessarily offline

Starting when convenient does not imply the whole programme has been downloaded or that it will play without internet access. An explicit offline function has its own storage and authorization behavior. Likewise, an on-demand catalogue is different from catch-up indexing of past broadcasts, although a service can offer both through similar screens. Check the supported option rather than infer capabilities from appearance.

An illustrative example

A viewer starts a film from its beginning while another person watches the live channel's current schedule. The film supports seeking, but it still needs authorized network requests as playback advances. That is on-demand delivery; the ability to choose the start time does not establish that a permanent offline copy exists on the television.

Practical actions

  1. Check the selected item and media options
  2. Record a repeatable failing playback position
  3. Verify documented resume and offline support separately
