The practical answer

Understand it. Then take the next step.

Aspect ratio changes how a picture is proportioned, while cropping removes parts of the frame. Neither operation increases the source’s actual resolution. Use the default display first, then change only the relevant control when the source is genuinely misrepresented. First decide whether the image is distorted or merely does not fill the screen. Correct proportions can naturally leave black bars, whereas crop intentionally discards content and cannot restore detail outside the remaining visible frame.

Recognise distortion

If people look unnaturally wide or narrow, an aspect-ratio override may be involved. Black bars alone do not prove a problem; they can preserve the intended shape of the image. Look at familiar shapes and faces rather than judging only unused screen area. A cinema-width image on a 16:9 display can correctly retain bars at the top and bottom. If the player and television both impose scaling overrides, return them to a known sensible baseline before attributing stretched faces or missing edges to the media itself or changing provider sources.

Understand cropping loss

Cropping can fill more of the screen by discarding edges. Titles, scoreboards or subtitles near the boundary may disappear with those edges. Inspect all four edges after applying crop, including any score graphic, credits and subtitle text. Filling the screen can be a viewing preference, but it carries a content tradeoff that should be deliberate. Cropping does not increase native resolution or change the underlying programme's intended composition; it shows a smaller portion of the image at a larger displayed size.

Restore before comparing

Return to default crop and aspect settings before deciding whether the source itself is incorrectly encoded. Stacked overrides can hide the original cause. Reset the player's crop and aspect override, then compare with the television's screen-fit setting if an external display is involved. Make one relevant change and replay the same scene. If menus are clipped too, investigate display overscan separately, since video framing controls cannot fix an interface boundary. Keep a note of the normal values so a temporary preference does not affect unrelated later media.

A practical sequence

  1. Restore default crop and aspect ratio.
  2. Identify distortion versus intentional black bars.
  3. Change only the relevant control and inspect the edges.

An example

Cropping a widescreen film to fill a narrower screen can remove picture content even though the remaining image looks larger. Check titles and subtitles near the discarded edges before keeping that preference. If people look stretched instead of merely enlarged, restore crop and inspect the aspect override as a separate control rather than stacking both changes.

Questions about this topic

Does crop turn an HD source into 4K?

No. It removes part of the frame.

Are all black bars an error?
